The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority's (GCAA) preliminary probe into last July's crash of a Caribbean Airlines jet has confirmed that there was not enough runway space for the plane to come to a complete stop.
BW523 crash landed at Cheddi Jagan International Airport in poor weather. The plane was carrying 157 passengers and a crew of six. No one died in the crash, although there were some serious injuries.
"At this stage it appears that the primary contributing factor in this accident was that the aircraft made a long landing and touched down with insufficient runway remaining to come to a safe stop," the report stated.
However it did not say what contributed to the bad landing on the 4,500-foot long runway.
It added, "Detailed analyses will examine several other aspects of this flight to identify any other possible contributing factors in order to learn from this accident and to help identify any measures which may assist in the prevention of future occurrences."
The Investigator in Charge of the accident is close to completing the gathering of factual information, the GCAA said, adding that a final report is expected to be presented in about a year.
