Thousands of persons booked to travel on the regional commuter airline LIAT have been stranded for a second day as a result of a sick-out by pilots.
The action follows LIAT's decision Monday to fire Captain Michael Blackburn, the head of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA).
“As a result of this action by the pilots, passengers are advised that there are likely to be cancellations or rescheduling of flights today,” the airline said in a short statement on Tuesday. The airline issued a similar release Wednesday advising that the action is continuing.
The Antigua-based airline has explained why it fired Blackburn. However there is speculation that it may be linked to comments he made on a local radio station relating to the flight operations department.
Blackburn is seeking legal advice on his firing and has not commented on his dismissal.
In a media release Tuesday, LIAT said it would waive for one week re-booking fees for persons affected by the disruption in service. It said passengers who are unable to travel as planned due to the industrial action will be issued a full credit for future travel if they request it.
