The president of the Police Social and Welfare Association has advised his members not to accept the Public Emergency Service medals for service in the country's armed forces during the recent State of Emergency (SoE).
Anand Ramesar believes the medals announced last week by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is an attempt by the government to make "scapegoats" of the officers.
"I am calling on my officers to take a stance on principle and reject the medals," Ramesar told the Express newspaper.
He stated that if Government really wants to reward the officers for their service during the SoE, then it should offer them a $5,000 tax-free allowance. Ramesar said officers should get the tax-free allowance "in time for Christmas.
This is a turnaround for Ramesar who indicated last week that officers would accept the medals.
He claims that he changed his position because officers have complained that the medals cannot help buy food and pay bills.
