Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced big plans Sunday for her Siparia constituency. These include a specialist hospital, a technology centre, High Court and other governmental facilities.
Persad-Bissessar made the announcement during a visit to Petrotrin’s Health Centre located at Clarke Road in Penal.
The new developments are in addition to the $300 million south campus of the University of the West Indies, which she inaugurated in February with the unveiling of a plaque in Debe.

Her entourage Sunday included Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim, Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal, and Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma.
“Our vision is for a hospital which caters for all matters relating to non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes. There is no point that every hospital be equipped and staffed to cater for everything in the world, when the specialist areas are left out,” the Prime Minister said.
Moonilal explained the purpose of the visit was to get a first hand look at the proposed site for the facilities.

“We are looking to establish government facilities here. It includes a hospital, a High Court, MIC technical training and regional corporation complex. We have to do more studies on the soil and geotechnical studies. At this stage we have no cost but rather a vision,” Moonilal said.
