Former UNC Leader and PM of T&T Basdeo Panday |
The former Prime Minister and founding leader of the United National Congress announced on Tuesday that he will lead a team to take back the party in the 2012 internal election.
Two years ago on January 24, 2010 Kamla Persad-Bissessar led a team in the party's internal election and defeated Panday 10 to 1.
Persad-Bissessar then united the opposition and defeated the People's National Movement in the May 24, 2010 general election that Patrick Manning called more than two years ahead of schedule.
Panday has been a harsh critic of both Persad-Bissessar and the government she leads.
Speaking with reporters Tuesday he said the rank and file of the party has expressed "displeasure" in the direction that the party is heading and announced that he will lead a team to contest the 2012 UNC internal elections, scheduled for March 2012.
He said the team will fight under the banner "Generation Next."
He declared, "We shall put up a full slate of candidates in the next internal party elections which are due in a few months time." However he added that he is not running for any post. "I emphasise, I want no office, I shall serve in an advisory capacity only."
Panday said he plans to hold cottage meetings in UNC areas and also use the Internet and social media to get his message across.
