No charges yet, 16 detainees may be free Monday

Media reports say the state has so far not laid any charges against the 16 men detained in connection with the reported plot to assassinate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessasr are three cabinet ministers.

If there are no charges by the time the state of emergency ends on Monday, all of the would have to be set free since their detention orders will expire at midnight.
Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard is on record as saying investigators have not made contact with him regarding charges.

Former Attorney General Ramesh L. Maharaj has suggested that the government has abused its powers in holding the detainees.

He told the Sunday Guardian, “There is no evidence against these people to prosecute but the Government has used the SoE and the detention orders in order to keep them.

"It is an abuse of process and in the future the time would come when those who are interested in promoting the rule of law and human rights would ask the court and the tribunal to rule that these actions of the State constitute unlawful action and abuse of process.”
