The government of Trinidad & Tobago will distribute a disposable, single use food card to people who are extremely poor and those who have suffered from natural disasters.
People Minister Glenn Ramadharsingh made the announcement Thursday at the post cabinet media briefing.
He said his ministry will distribute the card immediately to persons who qualify and make an assessment over a three-month period to determine if they qualify for the regular food card.

Those who will get it, he said, are citizens living in challenging circumstances, single parents, the elderly and the differently abled.
"We cannot postpone hunger," Ramadharsingh said, adding that when people come to the Ministry seeking help, they cannot be turned away.

About 30,000 persons now benefit from the conventional monthly food card that ranges in value from $410 to $750.
The minister said the ministry will rebrand the program and improve it to include healthy living choices, using funds from an Inter American Development Bank (IDB) loan of US$5 million. He said security will also be improved to ensure that the cards can be used only by those to whom they are issued.
