TT-US extradition ties remain strong; Holder says PM Kamla is respected leader

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters in Port of Spain Wednesday extradition arrangements between Trinidad & Tobago and the U.S. remain strong.

Holder added that there has been no negative impact on the arrangement as a result of the recent decision by a high court judge to quash the extradition to the U.S. of businessmen Ish Galbaransingh and Steve Ferguson.

Both men were wanted in the United States to answer dozens of criminal charges.
Holder declined comment on a matter that is pending before the local courts. However he said the extradition relationship between both countries is a good one.

"We have worked quite well in extraditing, in both directions, people to stand justice in both of our nations...I would say, generally, the United States is very satisfied with the extradition relationship we have had with Trinidad and Tobago," he said.

Holder spoke briefly with the media following a meeting with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's.

The U.S. AG said his country is committed to helping the region deal with the problem of the narco-trade. He admitted that demand in the U.S. is party responsible for the growth of the illicit trade.

He said the approach to a solution would include better law enforcement and causing a drop in demand.

Reporters also asked Holder to comment on the State of Emergency.

"We understand that there has been a very serious situation here that the Prime Minister had to deal with. This is something that we have been in discussion about," he said. However he made it clear that he would not elaborate on either the "serious" situation or the discussions.

He said his government is satisfied that Trinidad & Tobago is dealing with criminals and that the region has been "generally successful" in efforts, but not results, in dealing with the narco trade.

"I think a better job can be done, but the same can be said of those of us in the United States", he added.

He said the US was committed to a good partnership with Trinidad and Tobago. He added that Persad-Bissessar is a respected leader in the Americas and around the world.

"She is a person who is admired greatly in my country and deservedly so," he said.
