Stakeholders sign MOU to end impasse at Tunapuna Hindu School

The Tunapuna Hindu School impasse has been settled through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that would grant the principal of the school a transfer.

The Ministry of Education, the Board of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS), the principal and the Trinidad & Tobago Unified teachers' Association (T&TUTA) met to work out the details.

The MOU is dated November 22, 2011. The parties have reached the following agreement:
  • Mrs Sita Gajadharsingh-Nanga to be transferred to a Government Primary School
  • The Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) Board agrees to release the Principal, on her request
  • The Ministry of Education (MoE) agrees to hold discussions with the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) on the matter
  • All parties agree that the Principal will return to the school while the MoE holds urgent discussions with the TSC
  • A School Supervisor III will be directly responsible to ensure satisfactory return of the Principal and the day-to-day management of the school, in conjunction with the SDMS Board
  • TTUTA categorically denies making any charge of racism against the SDMS; the SDMS also categorically denies condoning any racism in any of its schools
  • TTUTA and SDMS are committed to the conciliatory process and will do all things possible to ensure adherence to this agreement including avoidance of personal attacks through any medium
  • The Secretary General of the SDMS will do all within his power to encourage the parents of the school to accept and facilitate this agreement
