St Rose advises media to "enlighten, educate, edify"

Minister Verna St Rose-Greaves speaks with her junior minister Ramona Ramdial at Crowne Plaza, Port-of-Spain Friday.
Verna St Rose Greaves spoke about the role of the media Friday, stating that media must aim to "enlighten, educate and edify" when addressing the issue of sexual crimes and crimes against minors.

The Minister of Gender, Youth and Child Development was speaking at the Crown plaza Hotel in Port of Spain at a stakeholder consultation of the standardisation of the legal age for marriages.

"I ask people all the time to use the media in ways that will enlighten, in ways that will educate, in ways that would edify so that we can get closer to the kind of country that we have the potential to be," St Rose Greaves said.

She said "child protection" is high on the agenda of the People's Partnership government.

"This consultation is not an attempt to blame or judge anyone as we must be mindful of our historical antecedence, our traditions, our culture and our religious underpinnings, I want to stress. This is not for us to be here to judge, or to blame or to cause a further fallout," St Rose Greaves said.

"Trinidad and Tobago as a maturing democracy on the eve of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Independence must take a deep and penetrating look at whether or not at this time of great national and global advance with regard to the rights and status of women and children whether early marriage should continue to be on the statute books of Trinidad and Tobago," she said.

"Pregnancy-related deaths are the leading cause of mortality in 15-19 year old girls," St Rose Greaves said, citing a report from the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
