The Parliament of St. Lucia was dissolved Monday, clearing the way for general elections on November 28. That's the same day that Guyana will hold regional and general elections.
Prime Minister Stephenson King announced the date Sunday night at a rally of his ruling United Workers Party (UWP), which is seeking a second consecutive term in office.
He said Nomination Day is November 17.
The UWP won 11 of the 17 seats in Parliament in the 2006 general election. However it lost two seats following the resignation of two Members of Parliament.
The main challenger is the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP), which held six seats in the outgoing legislature.
The SLP has predicted that the “wind of change” in the region will steer the party to victory.
It is urging supporters and residents to vote against the government’s failed policies, and high crime and unemployment rates.
