Prime Minister meets with staff of the High Commission London

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar held talks in London Thursday with High Commissioner Garvin Nicholas and members of staff of the High Commission, London on Thursday.

Nicholas and his staff briefed Persad-Bissessar on the multilateral, bilateral and consular dimensions of the High Commission’s portfolio.

They told the Prime Minister the High Commission deals with not only the Commnwealth but also the International Maritime Organization (the only United Nations organization in London), the International Cocoa Organization, the International Sugar Organization and CAB International.

The High Commission is also accredited to the Federal Republic of Germany, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Kingdom of Denmark, Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Finland. Nicholas is due to present Credentials to the Kingdom of Denmark at the end of November.

The Prime Minister was also briefed on the range of consular services provided by the Mission including assistance to students and to nationals in distress.

The Prime Minister was further briefed on the activities planned for 2012:

  • the Carnival in Cardiff, Wales
  • the five week Trinidad and Tobago Village during the London Olympics
  • 50th Anniversary Celebrations aimed at highlighting trade and investment opportunities in the twin island state
The Prime Minister in highlighted some of the key deliverables expected from the High Commission, noting that a primary function is to serve Trinidad and Tobago and that all nationals visiting the Mission and make them feel welcome.

Persad-Bissessar reiterated her vision for the Mission and thanked the High Commissioner and his staff for their hard work and dedicated service to Trinidad and Tobago.
