PM promises to investigate demolition of Couva Baptist church

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar met on Friday with representatives of a group of Baptists who went to Parliament to protest the demolition of their church in Couva.

The group gathered outside the Parliament’s entrance to meet with ministers to complain about the matter. Rev Hazel Ann Gibbs de Peza since the national library is claiming ownership of the land on which their church has stood for 26 years. She said the land is privately owned.

They called the demolition of the church an attack on the Baptist community. Communications Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan explained that the government has been standing with the Baptist community and assured them of that support.

However they demanded that their church be rebuilt.

Persad-Bissessar later intervened and met with three members of the group and promised to determine who owns the land. “It’s a very sad thing when a church is demolished so we’ll see how we can assist them,” Persad-Bissessar told reporters.
