Crime rates down because of emergency; 30 murders since SoE declared

A total of 302 people have been murdered in Trinidad & Tobago for 2011, with the latest homicide taking place Friday.

A young man was stabbed to death in Macoya. Police are searching for a 21-year-old suspect.

The figure for this year is more than 100 lower that the corresponding period last year. On Nov. 2, 2010 the murder toll was 406.

Police statistics show that 30 people have been murdered since the state of the State of Emergency on August 21.

Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs has said the emergency is working well to contain serious crime.

Speaking at an official function Chaguaramas Friday Gibbs said "the success speaks for itself when you look at the statistics".

He added, "I have said before the numbers of murders, the numbers of serious crimes that have gone down. That in itself is a success in terms of the crime rates being down.

"It gives us the opportunity for the Police Service—in fact, for all of the protective services—to now look at strategies for going forward, and to use the intelligence and the information that we have been able to gather during the State of Emergency to help set our strategies".
