BP $1B payment to T&T just 3% of debt owed

BP sent a cheque to Trinidad last week for $1 billion to pay arrears of tax owing to the country.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissesssar initiated discussions with BP during her recent visit to Australia for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM). She cointinued the talks in London with the energy company's CEO, who advised that BP will start paying its tax bills with a remittance of $1B.

BP, which is the largest energy company operating in Trinidad & Tobago, owes back taxes for the period 2001 to 2006 and is currently negotiating with the Board of Inland revenue to settle the taxes.

It issued a statement in which it pointed out that the amount paid last week is only three per cent of the total owed.
