Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has asked his American counterpart, Eric Holder, to do what he can to get T&T deadbeat dad “hiding” in the U.S. to pay child maintenance ordered by T&T courts.
He said he intended to “vigorously pursue” the matter to ensure that fathers who have abandoned mothers and children in T&T are forced to pay the required compensation.
Ramlogan made the comments when he spoke with reporters Thursday at the Hyatt at the opening of a regional security conference.
He said he raised the matter during bilateral talks Wednesday between Holder and a T&T delegation led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
He said he intended to “vigorously pursue” the matter to ensure that fathers who have abandoned mothers and children in T&T are forced to pay the required compensation.
Ramlogan said he also asked holder for information on the possibility of establishing small claims courts, which would be a great assistance to poorer citizens who find the regular court system too expensive to afford.
“What you need is swifter, fairer and more efficient justice and the Judge Judy-type court is something I think we can benefit from in T&T,” he said.
