Two police officers have been suspended pending an investigation into the escape of two murders accused from the Point Fortin police station just hours before they were due to appear in court.
Halim Ballack and Malcom Fraser escaped early Monday morning. The suspended officers were on duty at the station at the time.
Police commissioner Dwayne Gibbs ordered the suspensions as law enforcement personnel continued their search for the fugitives.
Gibbs told reporters Tuesday the fugitives are armed. “We are looking for the individuals who have escaped and ask the public to be very careful if they come across them and to contact the police. They could be dangerous,” Gibbs said.
Police discovered that Ballack and Fraser were missing from their cell before they were scheduled to appear in the nearby court charged with the murder of Wayne Carrington of Point Fortin.
Carrington was shot and killed on September 25 while he was sitting in the road near his home.
Police charged Ballack and Fraser over the weekend and transferred them from the Marabella police station to Point Fortin on Friday, for their court appearance on Monday before they escaped.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Fitzroy Frederick is coordinating the search for the escaped men. Police have released a sketch of Ballack. However they said they don't have a photo or sketch of Fraser.
