The Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA) issued a media release Tuesday giving a thumbs up to the national budget.
The business organisation said it welcomes several of the initiatives announced by Finance Minister Winston Dookeran.
These include several TTMA proposals, including a national policy on recycling, emphasis on increasing local content, increased transparency and accountability in Government procurement, a review of the Value Added Tax (VAT) system and public sector reform.
“The TTMA acknowledges that the minister has recognised several shortcomings in our economy and has taken the necessary steps to address these. The association awaits the necessary details on several of these measures and looks forward to the Government’s prioritisation of these initiatives,” the release stated.
The TTMA also praised the plans for the implementation of a Procurement Act. “We believe that a fair, transparent and open procurement system which minimises political interference will go a long way in building public confidence and trust," it said.
“The TTMA will continue to be part of the private sector organisational initiative which has made recommendations to the Joint Select Committee of Parliament on this matter.”
The release continued: “We welcome the initiative towards the establishment of a recycling industry.
“The private sector has proposed to the Government a draft legislation which focuses on achieving the aims of environmental protection in a manner which encourages full participation of the general public, creates jobs and efficiency and minimises the potential for corruption and is simple to administrate."
