PM Kamla asks for the AG's opinion on video of Warner at CFU meeting

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has asked Attorney General Anand Ramlogan for his opinion on a video circulated by the London Telegraph newspaper Wednesday with the voice of former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner addressing delegates at a meeting of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in Port of Spain.

The Works and Infrastructure Minister was at the time a top FIFA official. Following the meeting he was taken before the FIFA Ethics Committee and suspended from international Football pending a formal investigation of whether he breached any rules at the Port of Spain meeting.

Warner subsequently resigned his post as one of FIFA's Vice President and the world football body dropped all charges declaring that Warner's presumption of innocence remains.

However, FIFA has hauled some Caribbean officials before its disciplinary committee and the leak of the video coincided with those hearings.

The videotape features the voice of Warner telling delegates that FIFA Presidential candidate Mohammed Bin Hammam had offered them a monetary gift to for the use for their respective football organisations.

He also made it clear that no one was under an obligation to accept the gift and that the gift was not an incentive to vote for Bin Hamman at the election. Bion Hamman pulled out of the presidential race, which allowed the incumbent, Sepp Blatter to be elected unopposed for another four-year term.

On Thursday, Persad-Bissessar said, "I have looked at the video and read the transcript and I have referred the matters to the Attorney General to advise whether there is anything to be concerned about."

The Prime Minister also commented briefly on the resignation of Dr Eric St Cyr as chairman of the Integrity Commission. She said he made the right decision.

She said it is inappropriate for her to comment further since she has not yet been formally advised by the President with respect to the appointment of a successor to St Cyr.

"The process is the President will consult with the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition. That has not yet taken place so it will not be appropriate for me to speak on it. The President will write me and that consultation will take place," she said.
