A group known as the Balidaan Committee is staging a march on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the Jahajee Massacre or Hosay Riots that took place on October 30, 1884.
Historical records note that the colonial militai opened fire on groups of Indian indentured labourers at two separate locations in San Fernando, killing 22 of them and wounding at least 100.
At midday the first procession of 6,000 was sighted approaching San Fernando reaching Cross Crossing about 2:30 pm and proceeded along to the entrance of Cipero Street.

There the Indians met by British troops under Major Bowles. The local magistrate read the Riot Act and when the crowd failed to disperse, the magistrate ordered the police to fire upon the unarmed Indians. Two volleys of gunfire hit a stunned Indian crowd.
At the Mon Repos Junction of the Princes Town and Circular roads a similar fate was to meet the Indians there. The procession was in sight about 3:30 pm. Captain Baker gave the order to fire a single volley of bullets after the Riot Act was read.
The Jahajee Massacre Walk, now in its eighth year, begins at 6.00 am from under the Chaguanas Fly Over, proceeding along the South Bound lane on the Butler High Way up to Mon Repos, San Fernando. Leaders will hold a prayer meeting and address the crowd.
The Jahajee Massacre Walk 2011 is dedicated to leader and activist of the cause of the farmers of TT, Norris Deonarine, who died who died earlier this year of a heart attack. He died one day after witnessing a brutal attack on farmers.
The event also coincides with the 60th Anniversary of San Fernando.
