Police said Tuesday the number of persons arrested in Trinidad & Tobago since the declaration of the State of Emergency has reached 2,541. Of that number, 449 persons have been detained for suspicion of gang-related activities.
Police Service Public Information Officer ASP Joanne Archie told reporters police made 64 arrests in the latest 24-hour period, ending Tuesday morning with 16 of those arrested facing charges for drug offences. Police also recovered three firearms and 38 rounds of ammunition.
Archie said a high number of persons continue to be arrested on outstanding warrants. She suggested that people who are wanted on warrants should surrender and have their issues resolved.
"It is in your best interest for you to have these matters dealt with. Rest assured, we will pick you up when you least expect. Therefore to avoid any inconvenience, embarrassment, do yourself a favour and go to the nearest police station to have those matters addressed," she said.
Archie also commented on reports that police have seized two revolvers registered to the Venezuelan police. She said police are in touch with Venezuelan authorities to determine how criminals got the the guns.
