Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and other top officials will meet next Tuesday with scrap iron dealers to discuss ideas for regulating the industry.
He will be accompanied by Trade Minister Stephen Cadiz and officials from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and the Customs Department.
The dealers have complained that government's decision to seize their properties is causing hardships and depriving them of earning a living. The government moved on the scrap yards in search of weapons. It promised that people would get adequate compensation so long as they can prove ownership.
Ramlogan told reporters at Thursday's post cabinet media briefing that he has asked the dealers to bring proposals at the meeting next week.
The AG noted that the scrap yards pose a health hazard because they are frequently infested with serpents and vermin and also create ideal breeding ground for dengue carrying mosquitoes.
He said he also wants to hear of any plans to clean up their places and to stop using public property to store their derelict cars. He said he expects that they would understand that if they create a public nuisance they would have to face the legal consequences.
Ramlogan also stated that people who have legitimate businesses and follow the regulations will have nothing to fear.
