Jack on the warpath; says PNM courted criminals

Jack Warner accused the former People's National Movement (PNM) administration of appointing criminal gang leaders to prominent positions and dismissed opposition charges that race was a factor in many of the arrests during the state of emergency.

The Works and Infrastructure Minister used a map to show that the areas targeted as crime hot spots were the same that the PNM administration had identified.

He made the point in reference to charges by opposition leader Keith Rowley that the PP government was targeting only a specific group.
Rowley also charged that the United National Congress (UNC), which is the principal partner in the governing coalition, selected criminals as election candidates.

Warner, who is also the chairman of the UNC, told the house that former prime minister Patrick Manning had created a special post of national adviser to the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP) for deceased community leader Mark Guerra.

Warner also said when gang leader Kerwyn “Fresh” Phillip was murdered, “I am advised that he had on his mobile phone the private number of the last prime minister.”

The Chaguanas West MP said the PNM has tried to introduce “the race bogey” into the debate and charged that the PNM has become “apologists for the young black males” who are involved in criminal activity.

“The time has come for us to stop being apologists for young black people. The last prime minister had done that consistently for years. Have we as leaders told young black males, don’t wear your pants on your buttocks? Have we told them that?” Warner asked.

Warner recalled that Manning had a penchant for many foreign things “from Chinese workers to Chinese contracts to a Canadian Mr Big.”

He also dealth with Rowley's defence of the Special Anti-Crime Unit of TT (SAUTT), noting that the only persons who the Government sent home from SAUTT were 50 British nationals who were costing taxpayers some $100 million.
Warner praised his leader, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, for her decision to call the state of emergency. Warner told MPs, “It took a woman to do what a man could not do.”
