Reports say Sharma was being driven in his Toyota Prado vehicle, which crashed into a car and flipped over several times, trapping the minister inside. He and his driver were taken to hospital and were kept overnight for observation.
The MP for the area, Donna Cox, arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after hearing about it and assisted Sharma. Passing motorists stopped and assisted Sharma and his driver until an ambulance arrived to take them to the nearby Port of Spain General Hospital.
Later, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar thanked Cox for her help. She also said it's a miracle that Sharma survived, adding that he has got a third life.
“I said to him he now has a third life, he had his original life when he was in an accident some years ago, that was his second life, he now has a third life and (should) use it well.
"I thank God, this is another miracle. I am advised that the vehicle is totally written off, I have not seen it myself, both he and the driver are fine and we say thank God for that,” she said.
She described Sharma as a very caring person. “That is why you would see from now until he is discharged, you would see the number of persons flooding into the hospital trying to see him."
Senator Nicole Dyer-Griffith, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Communications, told reporters at the hospital Sharma was OK.
“He is resting comfortably although they are conducting standard procedures. He is not on the ward and we are waiting on the outcome of the scan,” Dyer-Griffith said.
Health Dr Fuad Khan confirmed that Sharma suffered soft tissue injury to his neck and ankles, but was stable and resting comfortably.
