Ramadhar dismisses talk about cabal in Cabinet

Prakash Ramadhar said Saturday there is no cabal in the People's Partnership cabinet trying to influence Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The leader of the Congress of the People (COP) made the comment during a walkabout in downtown Port of Spain in reference to statements by Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) president Ancel Roget.

Roget said last week a "cabal" is giving Persad-Bissessar the wrong advice on the labour issue to make her look bad.

Ramadhar, who is as senior cabinet member dismissed the idea. "I am in the Cabinet and I am in the Partnership and I am aware of no cabal that makes decisions that are against the interests of the people Trinidad and Tobago," he said

He continued: "What is a cabal? It is a word that has come about that has a very negative meaning. But if a group of people come together and decided on the best of intent for our people on anything, and that decision is against what you think should be done, do you call them a cabal? We have to be careful about throwing names."

Ramadhar said his party's view is that the economy is in a very vulnerable position. However he said the actions that Finance Minister Winston Dookeran have stabilised the economy.

He noted that some of the worst's strongest economies are under extreme stress, which is why the government must proceed with caution.

"We have to appreciate there is only so much a government can do without destabilising, damaging and losing the benefits we have already gained," Ramadhar said.

"Given time and as the economy rises, which is our intent, and as we transform it, to build it, we will all benefit," he added.

The COP leader said the recent reduction in the inflation rate to the lowest it has been in decades is a good signal. He added that the Government would aim to improve on that by diversifying the economy from oil and gas to include agriculture and food production on a much bigger scale.

He also said he understand the frustration expressed recently by Works Minister Jack Warner about not getting funds for major infrastructure projects. Ramadhar said that's a fault within the system that needs to be fixed.

"I could imagine the frustration he would feel...That is something we all feel strongly about," he said.
