Police plan 5 days of rest and relaxation

Police officers in Trinidad and Tobago plan to stay away from work for 5 days to protest unsettled wage negotiations.

However their union representatives have not sanctioned the action, which they are calling a period of rest and relaxation.

President of the Police Social and Welfare Association, Sergeant Anand Ramesar, told local media the police are upset because of several issues, most notably the government's insistence on a five per cent wage offer for the officers.

Ramesar said while police are being offered a small increase the Commissioner of Police is buying a million-dollar BMW vehicle.

"So we are saying, if you don't have money, why are you buying a million-dollar vehicle when you are already outfitted with a Prado?" Ramesar asked.

Ramesar was unable to give specific details of the intended police action, which he insisted is neither a protest nor a strike. He also did not know when the action would begin.

"My understanding is that it is going to mirror the CPO's 5% offer, which in essence is going to be one day per one per cent," he said.
