Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan told the media Thursday Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is recovering from the attack of dengue and has been working from home.
He gave the update at the Post Cabinet News Briefing.
"She is recovering. However as most dengue patients, she has a bit of weakness, a little back pain and slight fever at present. She is resting comfortably at this time and is being seen about by her private physicians," Khan said.
Persad-Bissessar spoke with cabinet members on the phone Thursday and asked Finance Minister Winston Dookeran to chair the meeting in her absence.
Speaking about the dengue situation in the country, Communications Minister Dr Surujrattan Rambachan said Trinidad and Tobago is not the the midst of a dengue epidemic or outbreak.
While noting that he is not an expert in the field, he used statitsics to back up his point of view. "Last year the Minister of Health said there were 4,000 cases of dengue in 2009 in the country. They did not call it an epidemic or an outbreak or anything,” Rambachan said.
“This year it’s only 1,800 cases and it is being well managed by the Government, and all the steps have been put in place. In fact, you have not seen such an aggressive, proactive approach taken with respect to dengue as you have seen over the last couple of days,” Rambachan stated.
