On the eve of a threatened day of "rest and reflection" by police in Trinidad and Tobago, a paid ad points out that the salary increases for police when allowances and other benefits are considered amount to increase of between 17 and 26 per cent.
Police have decided to stay away from work on Monday to protest the wage offer made to them by government's Chief Personnel Officer (CPO), saying the amount is not good enough.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is on record as saying the government is not in a position to offer more.
The ad presents a table showing four different groups ranging from constable to inspector highlighting the actual earnings under the proposed agreement that would be for the period January 01, 2008 to the end of December 2012.
According to the table a constable who is unmarried gets up a 26 per cent increase, when the entire package is taken into consideration. A married constable will get a 25 per cent increase. The increase for corporals is 21. Sergeants will get an overall 19 per cent raise and inspectors will get 17 per cent. Every member of the force gets a non-taxable allowance of $1,000 a month, which is part of the package.
The ad points out that the salaries and allowances are exclusive of back pay for the period since the beginning of 2008. The ad is reproduced below. Please click on the ad to see the details in a new, larger window.
