Letter: What struggles are unions fighting?

Exactly what “struggle” are the trade unions involved in and exactly who are they fighting?

Ancel Roget and Michael Annisette have both very publicly, and repeatedly, said they will “turn out the lights, turn off the water and shut this country down”.

They took the protest to the San Fernando General Hospital calling on people to basically support something that will inflict horror on their lives, just so a few well-paid people can get more money, in spite of the generous benefits that are already on offer in the form of non-cash benefits.

So basically, what the trade unions want is to cause power outages and leave tracks for bandits to run.

Basically, what the trade unions want is to shut down the water supply and leave families without drinking water, water to clean and wash.

Basically, what the trade unions want is for small businesses, vendors, taxi drivers, food vendors and the like to “buss” just because they can’t settle for a little today, a little tomorrow and a lot in the end.

They want it all now and are willing to sacrifice the comfort and peace of mind of an entire nation for a ‘struggle’ that amounts to selfishness and a total lack of understanding of the nation’s finances!

I also wonder if it ever occurred to Roget and Annisette and their friends that power outages could affect the hospitals where the sick, the elderly and newborns require treatment to live.

In addition, I wonder if they even care that power outages could put vulnerable neighbourhoods and people at risk in the dark.

What’s more, I wonder if they even have any concern for the fact that a higher wage bill, without a resulting higher level of productive output will impact the strength and stability of the entire economy.

Who cares about the economy!? All they want is money, even if it means that the source of the money destabilises!

What rubbish! No right thinking person in our country will ever support a national shutdown because people today understand that moves like those will only harm the very core of our livelihoods and serve no useful purpose!
