UDeCOTT gets major infrastructure projects in health sector

Cabinet has given the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad & Tobago (UDeCOTT) approval to begin major infrastructural work in the health sector.

Speaking at the post cabinet news conference Thursday, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan confirmed that UDeCOTT will be responsible for building a children’s hospital in Chaguanas.

He said that is only one of several health sector projects approved by cabinet. Others include a national oncology centre and hospitals in Arima, Sangre Grande and Point Fortin. He said the cabinet agreed to upgrade the country's main hospitals in Port-of-Spain and San Fernando hospitals.

Khan told reporters he would be able to reveal the cost of the projects in about two weeks.

With respect to the San Fernando hospital, he said the Chancery Lane Complex project to increase bed space is ongoing. In addition he said the hospital lacks a neurosurgical.

He also said the Scarborough hospital would be completed by the end of the year.

Khan said the government plans to set up a special diagnostic centre to deal with the backlog of people waiting for MRI and CT scans at the country's hospitals.

In addition he announced plans to extend the opening hours at health clinics across the country and equip them with operating theatres and beds to deal with emergency and trauma cases.
