Former sugar union boss Boysie Moore-Jones dies

Friends, relatives and former colleagues paid tribute to Boysie Moore Jones Monday who was laid to rest within hours of his death at age 74.

Moore-Jones took over the leadership of the All Trinidad Sugar and General Workers' Trade Union (ATSGWTU) in 1995 when Basdeo Panday gave up the union's presidency to become Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

Panday was one of the mourners at the funeral. Others included cabinet minister and former union leader Rudranath Indarsingh and Labour Minister Errol McLeod.

Moore-Jones was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 12 years ago. He underwent open-heart surgery about six years ago. He was also diabetic and suffered with hypertension.

Indarsingh said his late colleague made a great contribution in transforming the lives of thousands of citizens of this country and in improving their quality of life and their standard of living.

McLeod described Moore Jones as man who stood tall among men in the struggle for peace, bread and justice. Trade unionist Vincent Cabrera, who also attended the funeral, described Moore Jones as "one of the most effective trade unionists I knew. He was very quiet but he got the job done".
