Emancipation celebrations to be held at Grand Stand

The Emancipation Support Committee (ESC) confirmed on Monday that it will use the Grand Stand for Emancipation 2011 celebrations.

Arts and Multicultural Minister Winston peters said last week the venue was unavailable due to drainage problems that would not be fixed in time for the celebrations.

However, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar intervened and asked a technical team to meet with the Emancipation Support Committee and the National Carnival Committee (NCC) to discuss what interim steps could be taken to ensure that the celebrations could proceed safely.

Following the meeting ESC chairman Khafra Kambon stated that the committeee is grateful to the management at the Savannah "for hearing our requests and finding mutually beneficial solutions. We look forward to a safe and enjoyable Emancipation Celebrations 2011."

The grand opening of the celebration is scheduled for Thursday at the Grand Stand.
