Big plans for central to include airport and aviation complex

The government of Trinidad and Tobago is planning a modern aviation complex in central Trinidad that will include an airport near Couva as part of a development cluster to the area.

The complex will be close to the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and provide services for the Industrial complex.

The idea was first announced by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessasr in May. However formal confirmation came Wednesday from Fazal Karim, Minister of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education.

Karim was speaking at the opening of the Youth Training Employment and Partnership Programme (YTEPP) at Point Lisas Training and Enterprise Academy.

He said the government has asked his ministry to undertake a feasibility study to explore the start of an aviation complex at the University of T&T’s Point Lisas Campus and at the Camden airbase.

The minister also spoke about the problem of male under-achievement and announced some findings of a study on the factors which has affected the male re-entry into the post secondary and tertiary education sector.

He said the results show half of males fail the CXC English exams while others lacked financial support and hands-on training opportunities.

Karim said his ministry is undertaking several initiatives to deal with the problems. One of them is the establishment of work force assessment centres to certify skilled citizens.

Couva South MP and Minister in the Ministry of Local Government, Rudranath Indarsingh, said an airport at Couva would facilitate further industries, including tourism and flight training schools.

He suggested this could open up opportunities for local and international students and boost employment opportunities in the area. He noted that central Trinidad could be a focus for tourism with the Temple in the Sea, the Sugar Museum and the 80-foot Hanuman murti.
