Woman condemns police for killing her abusive husband

Police shot and killed a violent man Saturday night who they say attacked them with a pickaxe and cutlass when they went to his home in Basta Hall, Central Trinidad to investigate a report that the man was being abusive to his family.

However, the man's widow, Tara Ramdial, is telling a different story. According to her version of the event, she said her husband had no weapon and the police shot and killed him when he opened the door to let the officers into the family home.

And she is demanding that the police produce the evidence to support their story.

On Saturday night the woman appealed for help from police after her husband, Kamal Krishna Ramdial, became abusive to her and their teenage children.

According to a report in the Express newspaper, she said her husband "was angry and out of hand many times before. But they (the police) behaved like he is a rapist or bandit. We thought they would have talked to him and he would have changed."

She added, "They shot him as he open the door. They found his hatchet in the garage and started beating open the door. As they opened the door, they shot him.

The paper said it talked with one of the officers involved in the case who explained that Tara Ramdial obtained a protection order against her husband two Saturdays ago and that when they arrived at the house on Saturday night they found out that Ramdial had locked himself into a room with his children.

The paper quoted the officer as saying that a relative came and the children were able to get out the house.

"We saw a door open at the side of the house. When we knocked on the door, he rushed out with a pick axe and a cutlass. He was coming at the police officers to chop them. But the police officer was jammed against a post and he asked to stop and drop his weapon.

"He continued coming and the police fired one shot. When he raised and fired a chop, the police fired off two other shots."

Ramdial was taken to the Couva Health Facility when he died. Police are investigating.
