PSC chairman pledges to work with CoP to raise public confidence in police service

The chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) said Tuesday the commission will work with police commissioner Dwayne Gibbs and his deputies to raise public confidence in the T&T Police Service (TTPS).

Professor Ramesh Deosaran made the comment after a meeting with Gibbs, who presented his quarterly report on the Police Service to the commission at a media conference at the commission's office in Port-of-Spain.

Deosaran said the commission was impressed by Gibbs’ presentation and is looking forward to forming a partnership with the Police Service executive.

“Never before in the history of this country has the police commissioner had so much powers,” he said, noting that the commissioner now has complete power over the Police Service.

"We are looking forward to a new era in policing and in the governing of the Police Service because of the new role the commissioner has to play in appraising and monitoring the work of the commissioner and deputies.

“In carrying out our duties we will be fair but there will be the need for some measure of accountability.”

Gibbs told reporters, “We are working diligently to create a Police Service that T&T can be proud of and requires.”

He said the Police Service would work with the commission in moving forward with efforts to fight crime.
