No parking at King George for cricket, but PTSC offers free shuttle

The mayor of Port of Spain has bowled cricket fans a curve ball.

Louis Lee Sing has banned parking at King George V Park, St Clair. Port-of-Spain for the India vs West Indies Digicel Twenty/20 and two ODIs take place at the Queen's Park Oval Saturday and next Monday and Wednesday.

Lee Sing said the decision to protect what he called one of the few green spaces in the city of Port of Spain was taken by the city 10 months ago. He explained that parking on the grounds has caused the ground to become too hard.

“When water hits the park by way of rain now, it then bounces off and causes flooding all the way through St Clair and Woodbrook,” Lee Sing said. The mayor said he plans to plough the park to make it easier for water to penetrate the soil.

The decision has angered people who have used the park for decades as an unofficial parking. Many of them are saying if the plan is to plough the park, parking for three days won't do any more damage.

In response to the mayor's decision, the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) is collaborating with Johnnie Walker’s “Be a Giant, Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign to offer a free shuttle service to cricket fans.

PTSC Chairman Devant Maharaj has called the move by Lee Sing “highly insensitive”. Maharaj announced that all cricket fans with a valid ticket can board any PTSC bus free of charge for a shuttle service from City Gate to the Oval and back.

He said PTSC will offer a free ride as well for those who wish to park at the Divali Nagar site in Chaguanas and use the bus and attend the games.

The shuttle to the Oval will pass in front of the major car parks around the city so patrons can hop on board and be taken straight to the game.
