Manning taking Parliament to court

Patrick Manning is taking Parliament's Privileges Committee to court over his suspension from Parliament.

The former prime minister made the announcement to supporters in San Fernando Tuesday night following the end of his seven-day walk from Port of Spain to San Fernando.

The Privileges Committee suspended Manning from Parliament for statements he made about the cost of the private residence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the source of funding for the house.

He tried to get his lawyers to question witnesses at the hearings but Parliament refused to grant that. He subsequently applied for an was granted leave to go to court over the matter but since he has been suspended the legal context has changed.

He said his lawyers would be filing a motion Thursday to take the Parliament to court.

His long walk did not have the support of the People's National Movement's central\ executive and party leader Keith Rowley did not take part in Manning's protest. Only two MPs got involved - Alicia Hospedales and Amery Browne, but they did not speak at the meeting.

He told supporters he was holding the meeting to support the PNM’s determination to reorganise and in support of his political leader.

He said his suspension of May 17 was illegal and added that the move gave him a political opportunity. "We are not going to rest my dear friends, until the walls of the lying, thieving, corrupt government come tumbling down...the time has come my dear friends to bring down the walls of that lying government with a loud shout.”
