Manning ends march

It's over. Patrick Manning ended his seven-day walk from Port of Spain to San Fernando Tuesday with a meeting in Harris Promenade.

He was protesting his suspension from Parliament, which he called unfair. The final leg of the journey began at Taruba, accompanied by drummers and music trucks playing the "Patrick, we stepping up with you", the 2010 general election campaign song.

PNM members from Tobago joined him as well as former ministers Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Dr Amery Browne, Ralph Maraj, Alicia Hospedales, and former PNM Senator Laurel Lezama.

Manning's political leader, Keith Rowley, and other members of the party's parliamentary caucus refused to participate in Manning's march, which did not get the support of the party.

Manning's supporters said the former prime minister was marching for all the people of Trinidad and Tobago who want "a government that will represent everyone and provide equal employment opportunities, freedom, justice & democracy."

Those are the very issues that the current government raised in the election campaign, accusing Manning of violating people's rights, causing divisiveness in the society and abusing his power. The people rejected Manning one year ago and gave the People's Partnership a commanding majority to lead the country.
