The cardiac bypass surgery on the Prime Minister's husband is over and doctors who operated on him expect Dr Greg Bissessar to make a full recovery.
A team of 12 doctors were involved in the triple bypass surgery, which got underway just before nine Wednesday morning at the St Clair Medical Centre.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar expressed releief. "God is great. I just spoke to my husband and he is already making jokes and started to exercise. Thank God," she told reporters who kept vigil during the surgery.
She also suggested that people should pay more attention to their health and get regular medical checkups.
Tim Gopeesingh, who observed the operation, said Dr Bissessar was originally scheduled to have a double bypass.

However he said the cardiac surgeon determined during the procedure that there was need for a third bypass to clear the blockage in Dr Bissessar's arteries. He said Dr Bissessar will pay the bill for the surgery, which amounts to $150,000
