The Medical Practitioners Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MPATT) said Thursday the report on the death of Crystal Boodoo-Ramsoomair had vindicated the suspended doctors and nurses at San Fernando General Hospital who were involved in the woman's care.
Attorney General Anand Ramlogan told reporters Thursday institutional failings played a role in the death of Boodoo-Ramsoomair.
In a preliminary statement, MPATT Secretary, Dr Shehenaz Mohammed, said good sense has prevailed. She added that MPATT has long expressed concern about the shortage of manpower and equipment and how they negatively affect the quality of health care.
"It vindicates every single health sector worker because it actually shows an understanding on the part of the Attorney General that the systems these workers are functioning under are not optimum, or near optimum to provide proper health care," she said,
Dr Mohammed said MPATT is imploring Government to reconsider how the country deals with allegations of medical malpractice.
Former Medical Director at the San Fernando General Hospital, Dr Anand Chattergoon, said he supports the AG's conclusions, but insisted that the SWRHA is not the only institution which should accept blame.
"The Ministry of Health too, is responsible for many of the problems we face at the Hospital because we have been telling them we need more money. We wrote them recently to give us money for staffing, to fill vacancies and procurement," he said.
