"We will neither fail nor fall" PM Kamla tells supporters

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar commissioned a $2.9 million multi-purpose centre in Rio Claro on Wednesday that would take to the community all the services offered by the Ministry of the People, including a Social Welfare Department, Poverty Reduction Unit, the Targeted Conditional Cash Transfer Programme and the Probation Department.

“This would be the first centre that will house personnel from the ministry of the people and we are eagerly looking forward to the results that are sure to ensue,” Persad-Bissessar said.

She added, “It takes the burden of the journeys of Port of Spain and other distant towns for potential clients of the ministry.”

She noted that the centre will also have an added feature - the “People Desk” - for persons who want to voice concerns and grievances relating to the services offered by the Ministry of the People and Social Development.

Persad-Bissesssar also highlighted some of her government's accomplishments over the past year, especially the increased general assistance grants were offered by the people's ministry.

Minister of the People Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh and MP for Mayaro Winston Peters were present for the ceremony. Peters thanked Ramadharsingh for "the good work" he and his ministry have been doing.

At another event, the Prime Minister thanked her constituents for the support they have given her over the past 25 years. And she assured them that her People’s Partnership remains focused, promising that it would neither fail nor fall.

“For one moment I ask you to forget the detractors and distraction. We may not get it right all the time and every time...but one thing you can be assured of is that even when we falter or stumble, we will neither fall nor fail. For our actions are not malicious or exercised with bad intent,” Persad-Bissessar said.

She was speaking at the Scott’s Road Recreation Ground in Penal at the opening of the area’s social networking programme.
