Manning plans long walk

Patrick Manning is working hard on making a political comeback. On Monday night he told supporters he intends to walk from the Red House in Port of Spain to San Fernando.

"For the first time in 40 years I am unable to represent the people of San Fernando East because I am suspended from Parliament," he said.

"My responsibility is to report to the people of San Fernando East. Why that is so? They gave me a mandate and I am unable to carry it out. They sent me to Parliament and I am unable to go to Parliament."

The former prime minister said his long walk will be over a seven day period, starting Wednesday at three in the afternoon from outside the Red House. He will make his first stop at the Croisee, San Juan.

The next day day he intends to walk until Pricesmart, with other stops in Couva before ending in San Fernando.

Once in his constituency, Manning plans to "march" from Tarouba Junction to Manahambre Road, then Coffee Street and into San Fernando to Harris Promenade, where a public meeting will be held.

Manning's plan has been approved by the executive of his San Fernando East constituency. However it is not clear if it has the support of his party.

Manning was suspended from Parliament on May 16, after the Privileges Committee found him guilty of contempt for statements he made concerning the private residence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

His long march is similar to the one that former Couva South MP Ramesh L. Maharaj made in 2001 from Cedros to Port of Spain.
