Manning going to High court over privileges matter

The Trinidad and Tobago Parliament on Friday granted Patrick Manning leave to go to the High Court to fight his matter regarding his appearance before the Privileges Committee of Parliament.

The former prime minister was sent to the committee following statements he made in the House of Representatives about the private residence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Manning alleged that the house, which is jointly owned by Persad-Bissessar and her husband Dr Gregory Bissessar, cost $150 million. He also made other slanderous statements.

Persad-Bissessar subsequently produced documents to show that it cost $4.03 million. And the House of Representatives subsequently passed a motion to send Manning to the Privileges Committee for deliberately misleading the House.

Last month Manning tried to get the House of representatives to allow him to get his lawyers to question witnesses during his appearance before the committee.

However his own party rejected that and when it went to a vote in the Parliament only three members of the 12-member caucus voted with him. The others, including opposition leader Keith Rowley abstained.

On Friday an attorney for Manning petitioned the Parliament on his behalf, seeking "a true record" of the proceedings of the House of Representatives. Parliament granted the leave as requested.
