Jack Warner took time away from his official CONCACAF duties Saturday to meet with players attached to the Boca United Soccer Association in Florida.
Boca is one of the fastest growing soccer clubs in the United States. It is a non-profit soccer club dedicated to promoting and developing the sport of football in the Florida region.
While addressing the large gathering, which included several Florida district officials, Warner commended the players and the club officials for their continued commitment to sport.
“Football is still the only global sport. It has a reach comparable to no other sporting discipline in the world and there are a number of reasons for that," he said.
"The principles of this beautiful game - fair play, honesty, commitment, discipline, dedication and team work will inextricably mould you into the men and women of tomorrow. Football teaches you how to win and how not to lose, how to face adversity with strength. You may be a man down but then you learn to adapt your play to fit your opponent,” Warner added.
Warner, who is the longest serving member of the FIFA Executive Committee, also spoke of his life experiences.
“I speak to you today not as a member of FIFA, not as the President of CONCACAF, but as a product of this game," he said.
"I started this game as player many years ago, then I became a referee, then an administrator and today I am a Vice President of FIFA. There were many points in my career when I contemplated walking away from it all, when defeat was almost certain."
He added, "The obstacles of your past, the ones that you learn to overcome on this field, will become the gateways that lead to new beginnings. Be smart, work hard and you will always reap what you deserve.”
Warner toured the Boca facilities and viewed several practice sessions during the 2-hour visit to the club. Boca has designed a two-tiered developmental programme - youth recreation and competitive programs for boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18.
The club also offers an adult recreation program, and other youth supplemental programs throughout the year. All programs are managed by Former US National Player Eric Eichmann.
Warner is in Miami to chair the CONCACAF Congress which takes place from the May 1 to 3, 2011. FIFA President Sepp Blatter, UEFA President Michel Platini and many other high ranking officials of FIFA are also attending the Congress.
