Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Tuesday the government is planning to build a local airport at Camden Field in Couva as part of the overall redevelopment of the area.
She was speaking in her capacity as leader of the United National Congress (UNC) at a rally of the People's Partnership to celebrate its first year in office.
Camden is located just outside of Couva and is currently used as a heliport. It was previously used by Caroni (1975) Limited as its base from which it conducted aerial spraying of its plantations.
Persad-Bissessar said it would be part of an overall redevelopment of the entire central area, which would include a sugar heritage village and museum. The airport, she said, would serve the business interests of the neighbouring Point Lisas industrial estate.
She said in the long term there will be development of hotels and conference centres and eventually airport would become the country's third international airport.
The Prime Minister also announced that all school children in uniform would be able to ride any PTSC bus without paying for a ticket. In addition, she announced that all seniors over the age of 60 would be allowed to ride public transit buses for free.
