AG to develop plan to vest lands for housing in HDC: Report

Media reports say the Cabinet has mandated Attorney General Anand Ramlogan to develop a policy to ensure that all lands earmarked for housing are vested in the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

These lands include Pineapple Smith Lands at D'Abadie and Egypt Trace, Chaguanas. Bother areas were bulldozed recently by the HDC in preparation for the start of construction.

That triggered widespread protests from farmers who are demanding that they be allowed to continue using the lands as they have done for several years.
On Wednesday they mobbed the Prime Minister outside the HDC's office in Port of Spain office.

The Express newspaper quoted unnamed sources Friday as saying that most members of Cabinet agree that the housing ministry ministry must begin its construction cycle right away to meet its targets.

The boost in construction activity would also help the economy.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has said there is no conflict between one or the other. She said her government is equally committed to agriculture and the construction of homes and that there is room for both.

She has aksed both line ministers - Roodal Moonilal and Vasant Bharath - to find a solution to the problems that have developed since the bulldozing of productive plands on Easter Monday.

The HDC is hoping to build about 1800 houses on the two sites - Pineapple Smith Lands in D'Abadie (800) and Egypt Trace, Enterprise.

There was no post-cabinet briefing on Thursday.
