T&T conducting survey to assess living conditions of citizens

The government of Trinidad and Tobago is investing $4.6 million on a national survey to assess living conditions of people in this country.

Minister of the People Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh told reporters cabinet approved the project at its regular meeting on Thursday, noting that the last time such a survey was done was in 2005.

"This survey of 2011 living conditions will help us together with the census that is being done by the Ministry of Planning to do what we are excited about - something called vulnerability mapping" Ramadharsingh said.
He added that the information will help the government determine the location of families at risk and those "who are either on the borderline or prone or vulnerable to becoming poor or needy in many communities".

Ramadharsingh said, "This survey is to provide the Government with empirical evidence that will facilitate the design and implementation of the national poverty reduction strategy, its social programmes and policies."

He said the 2005 survey was done with assistance from the European Union and sponsored by the Poverty Reduction Programme. The report from that survey, he said, recommended that the exercise be carried out every three years.

Ramadharsingh said the information received from the new survey, which is being done with assistance from the local government ministry, will allow Government to track how it is doing with respect to the millennium development goal to eliminate poverty across the globe.
