REDjet not certified to fly from T&T

The no-frills, discount airline REDjet cannot operate operate flights through Trinidad and Tobago until it obtains a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

CAA director-general Ramesh Lutchmedial confirmed that Friday. Lutchmedial told the Newsday newspaper the Barbados-based airline must make a formal application and produce supporting documents such as its air operators licence it has with the government of Barbados, its pricing structure and insurance.

Lutchmedial said when that is done the CAA will make a decision on whether to grant REDjet permission to operate flights in and out of Trinidad and Tobago.

On Thursday Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner said he was not aware of details of the airline's plans to operate a service in this country. he was responding to questions from reporters who wanted to get his views of the competition REDjet would offer to the state carrier, Caribbean Airlines (CAL).

Warner said he is not concerned about competition, which he said is good for any business.

REDjet has said in media advertisements that it has applied for a licence and is saying that it plans to begin service from May 8 between Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana.

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has said Barbados does not meet the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which means REDJET or any other Barbados-based airline will not be able to fly into the United States.

The Barbados Civil Aviation Department has said it was working to achieve the rating to establish a US route.
