Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has announced plans to build a special children’s hospital in Chaguanas.
In a speech in Chaguanas at a dinner for the SAATHI organisation, she said: “I said before that my legacy will not be palaces or mega structures, it will be schools and hospitals.
"I want to build five hospitals and one of these will be a special children’s hospital. We will site this hospital for children in Chaguanas,” Persad-Bissessar said.
Trinidad and Tobago already has one children’s hospital named after former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam, at the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex, Mt Hope.
The proposed hospital for children, she said, is part of Government’s thrust to assist the nation’s children which includes the Children Life Fund and the national mentorship programme.
She also said government plans to expand and refurbish the general hospitals in San Fernando and Port-of-Spain and build new hospitals in Point Fortin and Arima.
Persad-Bissessar said she has asked Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim to submit proposals for the training of doctors and nurses to staff the hospitals.
She also said one of the goals of her Government is to achieve pre-school education for every child. She said 3,000 pre-school teachers would be needed in the country when the schools are completed.
