The Works and Transport Ministry inaugurated its Water Taxi service to Tobago Friday with the ferry "The Paria Bullet" leaving from the Port-of-Spain Terminal on Wrightson Road at six in the morning.
The vessel would arrive in Tobago two hours later. The ferry departs Tobago at two in the afternoon for the return journey. The service is operated by the National Infrastructure Development Company (NIDCO). The cost of a one-way ticket is $50, which is a highly subsidized rate.
Works and Transport Minister, Jack Warner, will accompany reporters on the inaugural journey. Others making the trip include the President of NIDCO and other Water Taxi officials.
The new Water Taxis have state of the art features to guarantee a high level of vessel reliability as well as maximum passenger comfort and safety. The Paria Bullet, has also been outfitted with a T-foil for enhanced ride control.
It's the first time people traveling between the two islands by sea will experience the kind of speed and luxury that the Water Taxi Service offers.
These sailings are to supplement the number of seats available on the inter-island route while the T&T Express is in dry-dock.
Four new 41m high speed water taxis were put into service in October 2010, on the service between San Fernando and Port-of-Spain routes. Since the inauguration of the service in 2008 over 700,000 passengers have used the Water Taxis.
